Many people have asked us the question, “Why should I drink water with a pH of ten?” This is an excellent question, and one that we are happy to answer with the recent national launch of our bottled water, Alkalife TEN. In this article we will explain why we believe a pH of 10 is not only the optimal pH value for alkaline water, but necessary to counter years of acid buildup in the body.
The pH Scale
All water can be measured on the pH scale, a scale that determines how alkaline or acidic the water is. The scale ranges from 0 to 14, 0 being completely acidic and 14 being completely alkaline. There are different factors that affect pH such as mineral content and room temperature. Everything above a pH of 7 is considered alkaline, while everything below 7 is acidic. Keep in mind that just because something is alkaline does not necessarily mean that it is healthy or safe to drink. Ammonia is highly alkaline and also extremely toxic! Many people think they can simply drink bicarbonates to get them into the body (such as drinking water mixed with baking soda). What they do not realize is that bicarbonates have a much lower pH, and do not produce as much of the alkaline minerals when digested. Additionally, drinking baking soda may end up producing salt in the blood, which is unhealthy.
During the time that Alkalife founder and Reverse Aging author Sang Whang patented the original Alkalife formula, ionizers were bringing water to a pH of anywhere from 9 to 12. Mr. Whang felt that a water pH of 11 or 12 may be safe for short-term cleansing, but sustained drinking of alkaline water with such a high pH might could pose issues connected to alkalosis, or too much alkalinity in the body. Mr. Whang then conducted bio-feedback studies and found the ideal mineral combination for Alkalife. With careful science, he was able to create a formula that brought water to a safe and optimal pH of 10 with only a few drops. Since then, Alkalife has been used by hundreds of thousands of people in 27 different countries over the span of 20 years.
Not all Alkaline Waters are Equal
Do you know the pH of the alkaline water you are drinking? Some brands claim to be alkaline, but register on the pH scale the same or only slightly higher than non-alkaline everyday brands such as Deer Park or Poland Spring. These waters are technically alkaline (any water above 7pH can make that claim) but in reality are only slightly so. We’ve even tested some ‘alkaline’ water brands that are no higher in pH than your typical tap water! Alkalife TEN is natural spring water and is always bottled at 10pH, so when we say alkaline, we mean it. We recently tested Alkalife TEN, 1 year after bottling and it still measured at a pH of 10.
It may also be surprising to learn that some brands of alkaline water may not even help the body reduce acidic waste due to their mineral makeup. It is important to know what minerals you are drinking, not just the pH. Alkaline water causes alkaline minerals (bicarbonates) to be produced the body, but the body has to have the right materials to make bicarbonates as well. Alkalife has a patented mixture of potassium and sodium to make alkaline water because the body needs to make potassium and sodium bicarbonates. With the right minerals available, the body has no problem producing these bicarbonates. Ionized water generally ionizes calcium in the water, and calcium bicarbonates are formed in the body. All three of these bicarbonates can effectively reduce acidic waste. Other minerals, such as magnesium, may raise the pH of the water without offering the right minerals to make sufficiently strong bicarbonate. Know your water, live healthy, and stay alkaline!
