What Is the Role of Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine in Brain Health/Function? - Alkalife

Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha-GPC) is a supplement that improves the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which, in turn, enhances cognitive functions like memory and learning. During strenuous exercise, Alpha-GPC has been shown to reduce the loss of choline, leading to improved endurance, hormone secretion, and athletic performance.

In a recentstudy performed by the National Institutes of Health, Alpha-GPC showed promise in being beneficial for tasks related to both physical exertion and mental clarity. Although additional studies will be needed to account for dosage strength, consumption timing, and test-subject selection, there were clear indicators that Alpha-GPC improved both brain health and function in study participants.

Choline: What Is Its Role in Cognitive Function and How Is It Related to Alpha-GPC?

Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine, which is used by the brain when performing functions such as learning new information or memorization. Choline is often included in the vitamin B complex due to its striking similarities to that class of vitamins. Choline also improves metabolism during physical activity andhas been shown to positively affect liver function, muscle structure, and the nervous system.

Alpha-GPC is a complex compound of choline designed to cross the brain-blood barrier, thus improving absorption and positively affecting mental focus, cognitive functions, and athletic performance.

Alpha-GPC is considered safe for consumption in moderate to high doses for individuals looking to improve both cognitive and physical functions. Athletes utilize Alpha-GPC to maintain reaction time even following strenuous activities, thus augmenting capabilities during physical exertion.

How Does Phosphatidylserine Affect Cognitive and Physical Performance?

Phosphatidylserine is a class of acidic phospholipid that constitutes approximately 15% of the phospholipids found in the cerebral cortex. It directly impacts the signaling of neurons in the brain and boosts the performance of both neurons and synapses. Phosphatidylserine is created through the synthesization of phosphatidylcholine and can be found in the membrane's mitochondria.

As a dietary supplement, phosphatidylserine has been shown to improve cognitive functions in those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-loss afflictions. Improvements in these groups were short-term, and further studies are needed to determine its effectiveness in treating memory disorders.

Additional Benefits of Phosphatidylserine on Body and Mind Functions

Independent claims have also shown phosphatidylserine to assist in a variety of other ailments improving symptoms for anxiety, depression, excessive stress, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, and multiple sclerosis. Again, additional studies are needed to show a direct link between phosphatidylserine and improvements in relation to the aforementioned ailments.

Additionally, phosphatidylserine has been used in individuals that show mild cognitive decline in order to improve brain function. In a2010 study, nearly 100 senior citizens were given phosphatidylserine for a period of six months. Following their treatment with phosphatidylserine, individuals who had shown poor memory scores at the beginning of the trial were found to have improvements in memory and cognitive functions.

Phosphatidylserine Effects on Endurance and Muscle Performance

In areport cited by Sports Medicine, phosphatidylserine supplements were shown to provide protection against increased cortisol levels and reduce muscle soreness after intense exercise. Cortisol is a stress hormone that has been shown to negatively affect physical performance during athletic exertion.

Alpha-GPC and Phosphatidylserine: Implications for Functional Improvement of Both Brain and Body

Multiple studies have now shown significant improvements in both brain and body functions for individuals supplementing with Alpha-GPC and phosphatidylserine. These benefits include increased cognitive performance and memory retention, as well as improved physical stamina and reduction in muscle soreness. Additionally, these supplements may help alleviate problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, depression, and stress.

It is important to note that additional research is needed for Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine and phosphatidylserine and their effects on the brain and body. Before starting any dietary supplementation, you should consult with your physician to determine the best course of action.
