Life ends when oxygen supply is cut off.  This is ironic because the same life-giving oxygen also produces acidic waste, resulting in a myriad of illnesses such as heart attack, cancer and even death, unless the acidic waste is neutralized and removed naturally.

How does the body neutralize and remove acidic waste naturally'  Blood contains an alkaline buffer called bicarbonate (HCO₃-) that neutralizes acid in the blood.  Unfortunately, the aging process causes a measurable decrease in blood bicarbonate levels after the age of 45.  This is the average age when a normally healthy person develops conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.

On the other hand, when digested food exits the stomach and enters the small intestine, it is too acidic for the intestine.  At that time, the pancreas produces bicarbonate in order to neutralize the approaching acidic food.  The pancreas must also produce hydrochloric acid, which goes into the bloodstream.  That is why people may feel sleepy after a meal.

Acidic soft drinks diminish the body's bicarbonate production and high pH alkaline water increases bicarbonate production.  In addition, pollution, smoking, stress, push-to-the-limit personality, etc., contribute to the decrease of bicarbonate.  The diminished bicarbonate levels cause acid accumulation because the body cannot fully neutralize the acidic waste it generates.  This is the aging process.
